Anyone here work or has worked for a charity?
Prince William's Earthshot has inspired me to set up a charity to help clean up the planet. I'm not sure how to go about it though.

What an inspirational lot you are.
At best Alfs will keep well clear of charities and maybe tidy up his house...

Nicey

Many many years ago I was buying a new computer for the company I was working for at the time, this was a large expensive beast (Circa £500k)

I was buying it from IBM, they took me on a trip to the Factory in Rome where this thing was made, on that trip was the IT manager from the Charity you're referring to

He told me that he was also buying lots of IBM kit, not because the organisation needed it but because he needed to "Get rid" of the money

I volunteer one day a week for an animal charity and really enjoy it.

In general though ive found that whilst most charitable organisations pay there footsoldiers less than the private sector they then spunk hundreds of thousands on unnecessary middle mamagrment and consultants.to tell them where there going wrong
Probably like most organisations in fact.

There are already enough charities - find one that does what you want and volunteer to work for them.

That isn’t the usual route though if you want to create a vehicle that will pay yourself and your friends and family a nice salary whilst pretending to help by further diluting the money that can go to a cause.

The more charities the less money gets to the people that need it.

It’s an emotive issue but if you look how some charities operate you would wince but if you raised it as an issue you would be shot down because so many people give up their time and efforts for a cause they believe in - this makes other people rich.

I’ll give you a clue

There is a huge charity whose name suggest they research cures for a problem.

They don’t spend a penny on that research.

After salaries and costs are deducted they gift the remainder entirely to massive global pharmaceutical companies to encourage them to carry out the research.

If those pharma companies come up with a cure they charge local health authorities large amounts for the cure to cover their research and development and make their profit.

Genius business model really.

Free money from the people to research.

Then get paid for the results from health authorities that are funded by the people via tax.

I gets worse though - fund raisers that have raised millions and then needed treatment which cost less than they have raised are unable to access the treatment due to the postcode in which they live - cruel irony

Maybe charity is the wrong term as I won't be looking to raise any money, but provide a free service that encourages kids to clean up beaches, streets, fields etc.

Setting up a charity is a good way to get yourself a decent salary.

Couldn't you just run a marathon for a charity that's already established?

I’ve worked in fundraising for about 15 years, for both large and small charities. It’s fucking hard work, you need to be pretty resilient but it can be very rewarding.
